Whether you're saving for a vacation, a big screen TV, or just establishing an emergency fund, there are ways to put money aside that don't involve selling or exposing body parts. Save money without feeling the pinch. Here are some ideas:
- Give yourself a raise - Remember the raise you got last year and the one the year before that and the one the year before that? You allowed your lifestyle to absorb it, didn't you? Next time you get a raise, put that money aside. Or put half of it aside. You didn't need it before. Why would you need it now?
- Make it automatic - The IRS knows what they're doing. They take their share before you even touch it, automatically. You probably don't even know how much they took from your last paycheck. Isn't it time you got a piece of the action? Have a certain amount of your paycheck automatically deposited into a savings account. Chances are you won't notice it, just like the federal government hopes you won't notice the next big tax hike.
- Shop around - Look for a better rate on auto insurance or life insurance. Instead of absorbing the money you save into your budget, have the difference automatically deposited into a savings account.
- Reduce those rates - Call your credit card company and ask for a reduced interest rate. There's a good chance they'll say yes. Your debt will be paid faster, allowing you to save more.
- Turn your debts into savings - Once you pay off a credit card, a medical bill, or an automobile, take the money you'd been spending on debt and pay it into savings.
- Cancel unnecessary memberships - You've been meaning to go to the gym for four years, but you just haven't gotten around to it. Maybe it's time to cancel the membership and stick that money into savings. The same principle applies to country clubs, music clubs, reading clubs, Barney's fan club, banks that charge monthly fees for checking, and that subscription to Teen People Magazine that you stopped reading when you turned 24.
- Sell your junk - When's the last time you wore that bright orange tuxedo or listened to your Best of Blue Oyster Cult Album? Someone will think your junk's better than their junk and give you money for it. Take that money and stash it.
- Find ways to make what you're saving for less expensive - If you're saving for a vacation, find ways to save money on flights, hotel, rental cars, food, and refrigerator magnet souvenirs; if you're saving for a car, shop around and look for rebates and other cash incentives; if you're building an emergency fund, find the highest rate money market or savings account.
- Have fun - The last thing you want to do when saving for the future is to make the present miserable. Save some. Spend some. Be wise. Have fun.
